I'd like to announce both the Grand-Prize winner and reveal a gift to each person who was bold enough to submit their idea in a public forum.
The Grand-Prize winner is Sarah Blaker who's organic fair-trade coffee business is already off the ground and running. However, she was losing all her profit by going through the wholesale coffee distributors. It is her vision to build her own website for direct distribution to customers, where she keeps not only all the profits, but builds a valuable Web property as well.
I chose her idea because I thought she would benefit the most from my help. Her product is already established and is at the right moment where my help could provide tremendous benefit to her.
I was very impressed with the other ideas. I truly appreciate everyone spending time to submit them and risking public scrutiny. I would not want you to go unrewarded. So for every single person who submitted an idea. I wanted to extend some help to you. Any time over the next year, if you become stuck and aren't certain about how to move forward, no matter what the question. Just send me an email and I'll do my very best to answer your question and help you move forward.
Also, just for clarity. There were questions of whether it would be me, who would be doing the web design. The answer is yes. It's been my secret weapon since I originally started my first web business in 1995. I spent alot of time reading the technical books learning web design, graphic design, database design as well as learning search engine optimization techniques on my own.
None of these things are easy, but this is a key difference between those who are successful. And those who are not. The ones who've chosen to sit down with the technical books and put their nose in it for long hours are rewarded handsomely. They can implement their own ideas, without being drained by going through designers.
I remember when I was first starting out and I couldn't afford the reference books. I also didn't have a laptop so I'd go to Barnes and Nobles and sit and read the books there, take notes, and come home and practice. The good news is that although the learning curve is steep, it does slow down. Once you have the core skills, you're set.
I wanted to give a few examples of what I use now. I use Microsoft Expression Web to build and manage my website at BestWebsite.com, it allows for complete control and the most possible options for building and managing a website including database implementation. It's difficult to learn however.
I use TypePad.com to manage my blog at NelsonBates.com. The blogging platforms have become so powerful it's the correct choice for most people starting a web business. As long as you don't have a bunch of products and/or don't need a database, it's a great choice to start out building your web business because you can manage it entirely through a Web browser.
And finally, the Start Something Brilliant campaign has been so successful I will likely run another one before the year is out. If you didn't get picked as the winner this time, all is not lost, start your business now, move it further down the line and submit your idea again.
I truly appreciate having you as a reader of my blog, this has been my way of giving back. Thank you.
